Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology to achieve innovation in medicine, providing new therapeutics and diagnostic tools. It exploits the properties of materials at the nanometric scale (10-9 m). The nanometric size is the scale of many biological mechanisms in the human body allowing nanoparticles and nanomaterials used in medicine to cross natural barriers and to access new sites of drug delivery and/or to interact with DNA or small proteins at different levels, in blood or within organs, tissues or cells, improving the therapeutic outcomes and reducing side effects.
