WP1: Reference samples and reference techniques

  • Task 1.1: Provision of appropriate reference samples
The aim of this task is to build competencies and expertise for the production of reference samples appropriate for end-users performing total hemispherical emissivity on low emissivity foils. The low emissivity reference samples will be adapted to the reflective properties of highly reflecting foils in particular to the magnitude of reflectivity and to the angular distributions of the reflected radiation. This task will also provide partners involved in the project with sets of calibrated and fit-to-purpose reference samples allowing them to calibrate setups for the measurement of emissivity of highly reflecting foils.
  • Task 1.2: Improvement of reference techniques
The aim is to improve the reference techniques already available at PTB, LNE and DTU to allow the measurement of total hemispherical emissivity of solid samples with a high reflectance and different ratios of specular reflectance/hemispherical reflectance with an uncertainty below 0.02 for an emissivity below 0.1. The uncertainties will be assessed and validated by an intercomparison. The setups will be adapted to allow the measurement of thin reflective foils to enable the setups taking part in the intercomparison to be performed in Task 2.1

WP2: End-users techniques, good practice guides and improvement of standards

  • Task 2.1: Investigation of industrially used measurement techniques
The aim of this task is to investigate and evaluate industrially used measurement techniques and instrumentations with regard to their suitability for measuring the emissivity of reflective foils with low uncertainties. The reproducibility of the partners’ instruments will be quantified experimentally and the uncertainties will be assessed and validated by comparison to reference techniques. As a result of this task a validated uncertainty budget for the industrially used measurement techniques will be available.
  • Task 2.2: Establishing the calibration and measurement procedures for end-users
The aim is to establish calibration and measurement procedures for end-users which enable the determination of the total hemispherical emissivity of highly reflecting foils (ε < 0.1) with an uncertainty below 0.03. The results of Task 2.1 will serve as basis to develop good-practice guides. The procedures will be evaluated by intercomparison with reference samples provided by WP 1. Additionally an intercomparison with highly reflecting foils will be performed as final verification of the developed procedures. As a result of this task, best practice guides will be available which provide validated and detailed calibration and measurement procedures. The results from this task will be incorporated into the recommendations for improvement of related standards (EN 16012 and EN 15976).
  • Task 2.3: Improvement of Standards EN 16012 and EN 15976
The aim of this task is to directly help CEN/TC 89/WG 12 and CEN TC 254/WG 14 to improve the sections of standards EN 16012 and EN 15976 related to emissivity measurement. The knowledge of the partners, the experience gained in the project and the technical results from the project will be used. The proposals of improved sections will be easily usable by the working groups to improved standards EN 16012 and EN 15976.

WP3: Creating impact

The aim of this work package is to ensure efficient dissemination of knowledge generated by the project with a focus on adding input to the standardisation working groups CEN/TC89/WG12 and CEN TC254/WG14. The manufacturers of insulation products, institutes and laboratories involved in development certification and performance tests on insulation products will be informed directly or through manufacturers associations. The impact toward metrology and thermal science communities will be through presentations at international conferences and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The good practice guides will be made easily and widely accessible to end-users by open access publications.

  • Task 3.1 Knowledge transfer
  • Task 3.2 Training
  • Task 3.3 Uptake and exploitation

WP4: Management and coordination

The aim of this work package is to ensure high quality and efficient project implementation and management. All JRP-Partners will participate through attendance at project meetings and contribution to the reporting.

  • Task 4.1: Project management
  • Task 4.2: Project meetings
  • Task 4.3: Project reporting
